Study at the Lab
The Visual Narrative Lab at VUW has study options for students of all levels:
-
Undergraduate students can explore our courses in the Communication Design major of the Bachelor of Design Innovation (BDI) in the School of Design.
-
Our new offering for Masters of Fine Arts students is the MFA in Creative Practice (Visual Narrative), where those with some experience in storytelling or visual arts can spend a year creating a fully realized work with the help of award-winning faculty in the narrative arts.
-
We also consider applications from doctoral students interested in pursuing a PhD related to the visual narrative arts. PhD students and supervisors can be found on the Who We Are page.
Student projects
“I had the opportunity to intern with Daylight, an Auckland-based design technology and creative studio. Being part of such a vibrant and productive space was truly inspiring. It deepened my understanding of creative practice and its potential.”
Lucy Woodall, MFA(CP) in Design, interned at Daylight
“Exploring visual narrative design in my postgraduate study has opened up so many doors for me. From research and reading to design and play-testing, being able to study tabletop role-playing games feels like a dream come true.”

The Visual Narrative MFA in Creative Practice combines courses like Visual Development and Narrative Design with practical experience in managing a creative career. You can explore new techniques and media, while collaborating with students from Film, Theatre, Music, or Animation and VFX.
Craft a powerful story, full of rich images and complex ideas. Conjure a new world of emotion using your command of visual language. Then bring it all together in a masterful final project with the help of award-winning faculty in the narrative arts.
Take the leap and join us in envisioning the stories of tomorrow. The one-year degree includes coursework and a final project, but not an academic thesis.
Prepare a short portfolio and Expression of Interest. Guidance and application information at our Master of Fine Arts (Creative Practice) — Visual Narrative page on the Victoria University of Wellington website.
